The traditional settlement of Samonas is a complete neighbourhood located in the village of Samonas, in the district of Apokoronas, at an altitude of 400 m and at a distance of 25 km from Chania.

The village still preserves its picturesque character since it is really very small and has very few inhabitants. Their main occupation is stock-raising, agriculture and apiculture.

The settlement is built on a hill slope and it has such an orientation that it offers an impressive view from all dwellings.

Looking over from the settlement's location, we get the impression that we could touch the Lefka Ori, or dive into the vast Cretan sea.

During night hours, thousands of stars will magnetize your eyes. Musical sounds, vivid colours, captivating scents, pure flavours and the close touch with nature will awaken all your senses and their remembrance will remain unforgettable.

Apokoronas Prefecture is well known for its hospitable inhabitants, its beautiful traditional villages and the unique nature beauty. It is worth visiting all of them, since each one has its own particular colour, traditions, folkways and history.
Stylos, Nio Chorio, Armeni, Kalyves, Plaka, Gavalochori, Kefalas, Vamos, Fres, Tzitzifes, Pemonia, Paidochori, Exopoli, Kalamitsi, Fylaki, Vrysses, Vafes, Emprosneros, Argyroupoli, Assi-Gonia, only to name a few.

The nearest beach in Kalyves is located at a distance of 12 km, while you may also visit the beach of Almyrida (14 km) and Georgioupoli (30 km), all clean and awarded with the blue flags.

You may visit Stylos springs, walk along rivers Kiliaris, Xydias or Almyros, marvel the biotope of Georgioupoli and the unique Kourna Lake found in Crete.

If you prefer the mountain, there are also many trails to follow. From Kares you will ascend the small stone-built structures of shepherds at location Gournes.

From Kambi you may start for the Volika refuge at an altitude of 1450 m where the only is access is by foot, or Psychro Pigadi, a location with view virtually to the whole north part of the prefecture.

And of course the choices are not limited here.

The gorge of Diktamos, 10 km long, is spectacular. Inside the other very near gorge of the area the Ramni-Macheri you will come across the Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos as well as of Agios Mamas. Other Byzantine monuments, the castle, Panagia Serviotissa near Stylos, Agios Ioannis Theologos, the monastery of Agios Georgios in Karydi.

It would be an omission not to visit Aptera, with remains from the ancient, Byzantine and roman eras.

The Minoan tombs in the same area are also impressive.

In the entire region there are more than 200 caves, the nearest Samonas cave located next to our settlement as well as the church of Agios Samonas.

All our dwellings are two-storey (maisonettes) with unlimited view to the mountain and the sea. They are exclusively built in stone and wood to match their surroundings.

Each is built at a different level due to the ground's steep slope, with common courtyards as well as independent verandas or balconies and quiet corners.

All dwellings have two main entrances with traditional rustic locks and big iron keys. They are decorated with many small folklore objects and antiques. All incorporate the same comforts and luxury, although they differ in size and layout.

On the ground floor,

a) fully equipped built-in kitchen with
oven, ceramic cook-stoves, refrigerator, freezer, dish washer, microwaves, coffee pot, toaster, small electric sweeper, pressure cooker and a whole line of well-known kitchen items and top quality dinner service.

b) Dining room with a large table made of wood and marble and hand-made engraved chairs.

c) Sitting room with fireplace, TV, DVD-player, stereo, telephone, double or triple couch with orthopaedic mattresses which very easily converts to two single or one double bed.

On the first floor,

a) bedroom with double bed with orthopaedic mattress, toilet-mirror, wardrobe, screen, full-length mirror, iron, ironing-board, telephone etc

b) bathroom with shower, washing machine and washer dryer, hair drye

All dwellings have at least one independent courtyard or veranda and balcony with traditional outdoor furniture.

Apart from the fireplace, all dwellings have air-conditioning on both floors and hot water from solar and electric water heater.
All furniture is handmade, carved made from beech. The linen draperies are embroidered and of top quality while the quilts and pillows are feather.

Communal areas

The reception area is common for all dwellings, presenting the image of a small coffee house where visitors may taste tsikoudia, wine, herbs and local dishes. During their stay, visitors can find in this area buy all types of local products as well as a small variety of necessity items. This area provides the possibility of internet connection and also includes a small library, music cds, dvd films and board games. The settlement also includes a large traditional wood-oven and barbecue, swimming pool, well equipped gym and Turkish bath.

All villas are self-catering. On arrival guests receive a welcome pack containing bottled water, tea, coffee, juice, yoghurt, butter, marmalade, honey, cheese, ham, eggs, olive oil, vegetables, fruits, cornflakes, cakes, biscuits and other foods. All the villas have a fully equipped kitchen with a complete set of cutlery and cookware. Samonas has a small shop on-site, selling everything from home-made sweets, raki, spaghetti, smoked meat, refreshments and alcoholic drinks, including a wide selection of Cretan wines. The shop also sells sun cream, shampoo and toothpaste. Books, CDs of Greek music and DVDs are all also available.
