Porto Del Colombo is an impressively restored Venetian Town - House, located in the picturesque, narrow back streets of Chania's Old Town, on the western side, a few meters from the Old Harbor's edge, blending perfectly into a beautiful neighborhood of similarly restored and decorated Venetian Buildings in cobblestone lanes.
The Hotel, an imposing, tall, 600 year old Building, has gathered a rich history over the passing of the centuries. During the days of Turkish Rule, the Building housed members of high ranking Turkish military who made many changes to the Building's architecture, a Hammam in the Garden and next to that, a Room to secure their slaves ( where you can see the metallic rings nailed to the walls ). At the beginning of this century it was used to House the French Embassy and later on became the home of the great Greek politician Eleftherios Venizelos who also used it as his political offices until his move to Athens, when he took power as Prime Minister of Greece. It was renovated in 1983 and modernized two years ago, to accommodate guests all year round, but still retains many of the original Venetian features.
