Elounda lies on the north coast of the Greek island of Crete, on the Cretan Sea, 8km (5 miles) north of the resort town of Agios Nikolaos. In turn, Agios Nikolaos lies 65km (41 miles) east of Heraklion, home to the nearest large ferry port, and 61km (38 miles) east of Heraklion airport.
Elounda is a worldwide famous and popular travel destination, located at the north-east coast of Crete within the prefecture of Lassithi, just a few miles north to it's nearest major town Agios Nikolaos. The village of Elounda as well as the neighboring town of Agios Nikolaos offer a well organised tourism infrastructure, beautiful beaches and numerous shopping possibilities.
Elounda hosts two important archaeological sites: the relics of the ancient sunken city of Olous and the Venetian castle on the island of Spinalonga.
The village is touristically developed with many shops, restaurants on the shore, bars and several excellent hotels famous for their comforts and the variety of amenities offered. The lagoon of Elounda is shaped between the coast and a small peninsula of 7-8 km length, that serves as a breakwater. Today the peninsula is separated from the mainland by a channel dug by the French at the end of the 19th century. A narrow bridge joins the peninsula with the mainland.
